An outfit may convey a variety of meanings – personal taste, profession, interests or social position. Artist Guda Koster plays with these identities, creating haunting photographs in which the garments play the main role.
Working in fields of photography, sculpture and installation art, the Dutch artist experiments with texture, color and patterns to make surreal images and underline the meanings laying in our choices of clothing. With their faces unrevealed, the identity of Koster’s models is encoded in their relation with the surroundings – their costumes either match or contrast with the scenery in a series of playful colorful ensembles. Showing several social references, Koster’s works are full of irony, mild criticism and the mystery that makes the viewer want know more.
