Oftentimes, we stumble upon artworks that stem from the same idea but have very different visual outcomes. That’s why we set up our ‘Two of a Kind‘ series – to see how two artists working with the same starting materials can transform them in their own unique way. This time, we gave Italy-based creatives Mathery Studio and Australian art director Sonia Rentsch a yellow sponge, clear plastic bags and some sewing pins. See what they came up with below…

 MATHERY STUDIO

Erika Zorzi and Matteo Sangalli are the creative duo behind Mathery Studio, an interdisciplinary design practice that explores the function of objects as well as the story behind them. For the two Italian product designers, their work and artistic process is mostly influenced by travels across Asia and Australia. For our ‘Two of a Kind’ series, Mathery Studio transformed the objects into eccentric and engaging still-life portraits against a blue background.

SONIA RENTSCH

Sonia Rentsch is a still life artist and art director from Australia. Her work typically features clever concepts with unexpected twists. For Rentsch’s ‘Two of a Kind’ contribution, the artist used the material provided to crafted intricate flowers against bright backgrounds. She used the pins to hold the flowers together as well as to create a structure for the stem before rolling it with the clear plastic. As for the rose made of only plastic bags, she says, “I liked the idea that it felt almost like Cinderella’s crystal slippers glinting the light.”
