In a country known for its vast and alien landscape, the architecture firm Krads has designed ‘Langitangi Country House’: a raw concrete holiday home whose clean lines and cool color echo the surrounding Icelandic wilderness.

This angular home is currently under construction in the area of Kiðjaberg in Iceland’s south. Situated by the water, with views that extend across it to the mountains beyond, the location—like much of rural Iceland—is populated by more traditional colorful huts and houses. Krads has broken with such local vernacular, creating a brutalist-inspired space that is focused on what they term a “careful and functional engagement with the dramatic and beautiful topography of the site.” The single-storey home has been laid out as a linear sequence of spaces, whose shape and views have been determined by the landscape both below and beyond. Every window frames a different vista, each as spectacular as the next. Such unique and detailed attention to location is characteristic of Krads, whose mission statement revolves around reimagining the Scandinavian culture of architecture.

“...careful and functional engagement with the dramatic and beautiful topography of the site.”
