London-based O’Sullivan Skoufoglou Architects have transformed a 70s Dewsbury Road home, with an extension characterised by warmth and minimal wooden design.

The main desires of the client were to implement a seamless relationship between the home and the garden and to open up the previously partitioned living and dining areas into a more versatile singular volume. O’Sullivan Skoufoglou Architects explain, “The response of the re-structured room places emphasis on the connection with the garden, with the dining area incorporated into the facade of deep vertical oak fins, whose rhythm on a brick plinth provides direct views out yet sideways privacy.” The studio has used a simple material palette of various woods, assembled as storage units and cladded finishings by a local family-run workshop, which creates a homely atmosphere of warmth and enclosure. Exposed oak beams are integrated as a structural and decorative feature in the ceiling, spanning across a skylight that immerses the space in daylight and invites the presence of outside from another perspective.
