London-based designer and engineer Leslie Nooteboom recognises the need for natural light in urban spaces. His solution is ‘Komorebi’, a minimally designed light projector that casts artificial sunlight and shadow effects indoors.

‘Komorebi’ has been designed in three main components: a small, sleek projector with a concrete base, an app that enables its user to upload their own light experiences to welcome into their home, “In a time where indoor sunlight is becoming more scarce, the need for technological nature is increasing.” and the computer generated projection that presents the desired effect onto a wall. The concept was born from Nooteboom’s concern with the absence of windows and isolation from the outside world into urban home environments. The designer explains, “In a time where indoor sunlight is becoming more scarce, the need for technological nature is increasing. With an ever growing global population and urbanisation levels reaching huge rates, fewer living spaces are able to receive direct sunlight.” ‘Komorebi’ presents a new form of technological nature that is easy to use and dynamic, inviting sunrays and reflections filtered through windows and tree canopies into the home. By allowing ‘Komorebi’ users the freedom to bring a more natural light into their homes, Nooteboom begins a new dialogue with the way the natural world is considered in urban living spaces.
