Elmgreen & Dragset Place Van Gogh’s Ear On Fifth Avenue

Words

Scandinavian-born, Berlin-based artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset installed a nine meter-high swimming pool in the shape of Van Gogh’s ear outside New York’s Rockefeller Center. Created from steel, fiberglass and lights, the piece continues the artists’ fascination with swimming pools in attempt to bring a sense of respite from everyday life to passers by in one of the world’s busiest urban spaces. “This part of New York is all about verticality. Horizontal would just not work here,” say the artists. “One can dream of lazy days under the sun while surrounded by all the traffic and business going on at Rockefeller Plaza.”
