Casa do Conto
- Caroline Kurze
‘Pedra Líquida’ created the ‘Casa do Conto’, located in Portugal. The task was to build a new design hotel, restoring a beautiful XIX Century Oporto House. The new project uses traditional surfaces – crossed wood patterns, corrugated steel plates and curved plywood panels – as a ‘mould’ for the new concrete walls at the central staircase, at the back facade, at the cubic bathrooms inside every suite and at the oval-shaped central skylight. The result is kind of a ‘fossilized architecture’ where modern surfaces rephrase the pre-existing ones. The ceilings are decorated by carved texts, in bass-relief, telling different narratives about the concept of the house.
