Created during an assignment as social worker in a refugee settlement in Austria in 2015/2016, the series shows unaccompanied refugee minors from syria and afghanistan. The symbolism in my sureal storytelling work encourages an exploration of the different emotional dimensions of refuge, escape, freedom, transformation, rootedness, war, injury, trauma, tradition/modernity, identity, family, vision, fragility and boyhood. The selected photographs of the series are Zialladin, Bilal and Jalal who escaped from Afghanistan without their parents – reaching Austria, where they are hoping to be granted asylum. Zialladin // transformation Bilal // war, inury Jalal // identity, gender Osama // kufiya turban, bandage Sajed // rootedness Mohsen // drowning, mediteranean sea
