Clarissa Bonet Captures City Space

Living and working in Chicago, photographer Clarissa Bonet explores the physical and psychological experience of urban spaces.

Bonet’s ongoing project ‘City Space’ captures the body’s interaction with buildings, streets and concrete. She describes her work to provide “a personal interpretation of the urban landscape.” “I use the city as a stage and transform the physical space into a psychological one.”In this setting, Bonet photographs everyday occurrences–suited men walking between buildings and lone figures caught as shadows, as the sunlight fills empty spaces of the streets. Translated through her vision of stark light and high contrasting shadow, the city becomes a sculptural and mysterious place. By presenting the urban environment in this processed, abstracted manner, Bonet distorts our perception of real life as it occurs in her images. The photographer explains, “I use the city as a stage and transform the physical space into a psychological one.”
