A Room Below The Indian Ocean

Located off Pemba Island, Tanzania, Manta Resort has recently opened the ‘Underwater Room’, setting the whole new standard for a remote tropical holiday. Reminiscent of a wooden hat floating on the Indian Ocean, it now has a glass cube that allows the guests to experience the underwater world while sitting on the couch. The project was originally conceived by the Swedish artist Mikael Genberg in 2000, who created ‘Utter Inn’, a single room lying three meters below the Lake Mälaren. Acting as a human-size aquarium, the Utter Inn accommodation allowed guests to spend the time exploring a marine environment, while reversing the roles within the species – the fish came to behold the human beings as if they were in an aquarium. Six years later, Manta Resort was founded, opening the experience for the wide audience.
