One brain

The Avant/Garde Diaries recently traveled to Olaf Breuning’s getaway house in upstate New York where the artist finds time to breath fresh mountain air and take a load off from the hustle of the contemporary art world. Sometimes, Breuning finds it challenging to always find new inspiration as an artist has also just one brain and is supposed to constantly develop new ideas. Breuning’s work ranges from photographs to installations to, most recently, film. At first glance, his art is colorful and quirky, but upon closer examination a devastatingly nuanced cultural commentary is revealed. Humor is often his primary lens to view the world, and this tendency dovetails with the costumes, wigs, and body paint that turn his subjects into works of art themselves.
