Parkhotel Mondschein: An Enchanted Oasis In The Heart Of Bolzano

Scroll

Set against the backdrop of the majestic Dolomites and surrounded by picturesque vineyards lies Bolzano, the capital of Italy’s South Tyrol province. The Alpine town is known for its historic city center, spectacular natural landscapes, and lively mix of cultural influences, and its proximity to Austria has earned it the reputation of being the bridge between Europe’s North and South. At the heart of the charming city, you’ll find Parkhotel Mondschein—a tasteful sanctuary for those seeking to disconnect and embrace il dolce far niente.

Parkhotel Mondschein is a modern, yet elegant hotel blending mid-century modernism with contemporary minimalism and old-time allure. Situated in the city’s center and surrounded by a lush green park, it looks back on a long history. Initially established in 1320 as the city’s first guesthouse, the building underwent expansion during the Belle Époque in 1890 to provide its visitors with more space to unwind. The warm and welcoming aura of hospitality is, therefore, deeply ingrained in the very essence of this hotel, which has been witnessing centuries’ worth of stories unfolding within its walls. A few years ago, brothers Klaus and Moritz Dissertori decided to bring a fresh breeze into the establishment. With Mondschein already being the fourth hotel the two have opened in the area, a lot of experience and know-how went into its renovation. In collaboration with architecture firm Studio Biquadra, the place has been transformed and reopened its doors in May 2022 under its historical name but with a contemporary concept.

From the outside, Parkhotel Mondschein, which translates to “Moonlight” in English, has the charm of past days. The façade still shines in its original warm ochre color, and the deep-green ivy that has slowly climbed up the walls over the past decades respectfully left space for the white window shutters on its way up. Adorned with stucco elements and the balconies’ Art Nouveau railings, the exterior radiates an unmistakable old-world nostalgia.

The interior was designed following the principles of coherence, elegance, and minimalism—a concept that cannot be overlooked when wandering through the hotel. Long corridors and high ceilings create an airy ambiance, offering room to breathe and let go. The ’60s vibe, most evident in the lobby’s distinctive bent signature window, is also reflected in the carefully selected furniture pieces throughout the hotel.

"We wanted to create a place where people can relax and take a time out."

Each of the 76 rooms within Mondschein is characterized by a color palette composed of soft grays, browns, and green tones—hues that reflect the surrounding mountains and cultivate a grounding atmosphere. Dark walnut furniture, comfortable upholstered beds, and timeless white lamps imbue the rooms with elegance. The preserved herringbone oak floors contrast the modern bathrooms, which follow minimalist design principles with simple tiles, frameless mirrors, and silver fittings in retro style. “Beautiful materials, good quality, and intelligent design were the top priorities for the redesign. We wanted to create a place where people can relax and take a time out. It doesn’t take much, but what little there is has to be first-class,” Moritz Dissertori emphasizes.

The hotel frequently welcomes artists for residencies, which resonates with the creative energy that has increasingly emerged in the area in recent years. In that context, sculptor Lisa Dengler, multidisciplinary artist Irene Fernández Arcas, photographer Karla Hiraldo Voleau, and artist and designer Charles-Antoine Chappius have stayed here, creating works that were inspired by their time in Bolzano and that can be discovered throughout the hotel.

Conceived as a sanctuary for relaxation, Mondschein wholeheartedly embraces its mission of enabling guests to disconnect from busy daily life and provides them with everything they need to pursue this endeavor in maximum comfort. Central to this experience is the verdant park, which surrounds the building and transforms it into an oasis of tranquility despite its urban location. Here, the ivy from the façade engages in dialogue with palm trees, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of an enchanted, historic garden. Curved paths of white gravel invite guests for strolls, while green benches offer quiet spots to sit and rest in the shade of the trees. For those who prefer to soak up the sun in the warmer months, the poolside is the perfect place to be. A small kiosk offering typical Italian Granita, homemade ice cream, fries, and refreshing juices ensures no poolside craving goes unmet.

Due to its central location and rich history, Mondschein is also beloved by locals. Its in-house Body and Mind studio, Arise, hosts yoga classes and retreats and welcomes both hotel guests and Bolzano residents alike—an approach that creates a dynamic mix of guests within the place. As night falls, the hotel’s restaurant, Bar Luna, known across town for its healthy breakfast buffet, transforms into a vibrant wine and cocktail bar, which has become a cornerstone of the city’s nightlife.

With this broad spectrum of offers, including relaxation, indoor and outdoor activities, Italian cuisine, exercise, and vibrant nightlife, Parkhotel Mondschein provides a holistic experience for its guests that leaves no wish unfulfilled. It is, therefore, not surprising that one can immerse oneself in a complete holiday experience during a stay in Bolzano without ever having to leave the hotel grounds. Yet, while this decision remains entirely up to the guests, just a few steps outside of this enchanting oasis, there is still the breathtaking landscape of South Tyrol waiting to be explored.
