Ben Branagan’s Bodies

London-based artist and designer Ben Branagan works across visual mediums, creating work that spans design, sculpture, and publishing. In his graphic collage series ‘Bodies’, he gives new form to a retro workout guide.

The black and white spreads of poised and oiled bodies have been reimaged by Branagan; in ‘Bodies’ these athletic figures become part of an abstract exploration of pattern and form. Using circles as its main graphic element, ‘Bodies’ cleverly shifts the viewers attention from confident bulk and brawn to more delicate aesthetic pleasures. In each spread, the circles alternate in size and placement, and as they are rotated and swapped, heads go missing, legs invert, and bodies become art. By making these small circular rotations, the spreads become less a study of athletics, and more an artful study of design.
