Slovenian architect’s office Premica Architects rebuilt a former bunker from World War I into a cozy mountainside retreat. During the war, a number of high-alpine fortresses were installed throughout Europe, some of which were transformed into cabins for mountaineers. Located in Triglav National Park, Slovenia, the newly designed alpine bivouac stands on concrete foundations, on the remains of a former shelter. Despite the rural surrounding, Premica Architects gave the cabin a modern interior that is both functional and cozy. The shelter features no running water or electricity apart a small solar panel for a single wall-light. Timber constructions and cross-laminated wooden panels were chosen to generate a homelike interior, blending in perfectly with the sensitive nature of the Triglav National Park. The assembled construction owns the natural wood appearance on the inside, whereas the high quality prefab-façade and roof panels protect the outside. The asymmetric walls ensure wind retention and offer natural snow shedding capabilities, preventing accumulation on the roof.
