Yanina Shevchenko Captures Subtle Pleasures In A Harsh Climate

Words

Russian-born photographer Yanina Shevchenko captured the subtle pleasures of everyday life in the harsh climate of Novy Urengoy, a Siberian city just south of the Arctic Circle. Known as the gas capital of Russia, the the town’s young population enjoys prosperity and feels positive about the future despite the challenges posed by both the economy and the climate. This is the mood Shevchenko aimed to capture in her series of pastel-hued shots which portray Novy Urengoy’s residents enjoying their leisure time in deep snow. Shevchenko graduated from Goldsmiths, University of London, and today lives and works as a curator and photographer in Barcelona.
