The Beauty of Cheetos by Jason DeMarte
- Caroline Kurze
Jason DeMarte combines idealist utopian landscapes with commercially produced and processed products such as Cheetos or Donuts. The tasty snacks, juxtaposed with the fruits of the natural world, spark an intriguing dialog between what’s man-made and what runs wild.
Instead of offering a moralized comparison, lauding the natural and condemning the artificial, DeMarte presents the strange beauty both have to offer. He says: “I represent the natural world through completely unnatural elements to speak metaphorically and symbolically of our mental separation from what is ‘real’.”
