In the German city of Memmingen, local firm SoHoArchitektur took a small plot of land, tight urban context and strict building regulations in their stride and designed the ‘UF Haus’; a triumphant space that offers privacy and light in a distinctly modernist package.

Edged in by properties and a number of well-established trees, the design of the property took what the architects termed “the borrowed landscape” as its central theme. “Both building volumes and their position on the plot are the results of the options available under building regulations”, the architects explain. Constructed from just three materials—concrete, wood and steel—the home is a true exponent of modernist design principles. “The interiors react to the local conditions and, despite their small volume and confined location, offer views in all directions.” Despite the large number of windows, their strategic placement means that privacy has not been compromised in the quest for natural light.
