“Discrepancies in how people live are sometimes hard to see from the ground”, South Africa-based documentary photographer and anthropologist Johnny Miller explains. “The beauty of being able to fly is to see things from a new perspective, to see things as they really are.”

In his series ‘Unequal Scenes’ Miller has photographed the architectural line that marks the division of people in metropolises around the world. What began as the desire to document the way in which South Africa remains unfairly divided post-apartheid, has become a global examination of inequality from above. Using a drone, Miller has photographed social and geographical borders across cities in South Africa, India, Tanzania, Mexico, the US and Kenya, these photographs make the growing divide between people impossible to ignore.
