A Typological Study Of Ice Huts

Scroll

Since 2007, photographer Richard Johnson has been traveling around Canada, documenting the architectural variations in ice fishing huts.

“As with its distant cousins the Teepee and the Igloo, the Ice Fishing Hut has its own essential purpose”Now in its eighth year, the project encompasses photographs of 800 huts from one coast of Canada to the other. Together, they form a typological study of the fishing culture and architecture across the country’s regions. “As with its distant cousins the native Teepee and the Igloo, the Ice Fishing Hut has its own essential purpose,” says Johnson. “Sheet metal, faux wood paneling, tarpaulins, peak roofs, modified camping trailers all fulfill the requirements for shelter.”
