Male Sport by Sophie Kirchner

Words

Sophie Kirchner’s series ‘Male Sport’ proofs that there is no such thing as a male domain on the field anymore. She portraits different women right after a game of water polo, ice hockey and rugby. The women’s pupils are wide open, the adrenaline is still pumping in their blood.

Kirchner states: “Who breaks with social conventions quickly becomes an outsider. Everyone is expected to play the role assigned to them. This applies especially to gender-based roles ascribed to us. I am not working with a specious emancipatory agenda and I do not want to simply provoke. My work is all about showing people who do what they love. Nothing more, but also nothing less. With my portraits I simply point out that these women are not marginal, but that society is marginalizing them.”
