Today we’d like to introduce our Insta Fav #73, Yokoo Gibraan who is running her own business, crafting beautiful handmade and vintage goods as well as scarves and accessories. She is quite a perfectionist when it comes to her work and she wants to truly live and enjoy life instead of just exist. Where are you from? How does that place influence the way you photograph?
I was born and raised in Connecticut. Regardless of what people think, Connecticut has a great deal of culture. I was fortunate enough to grow up in a diverse environment. I was exposed to amazing music and art at an early age which led me to be open-minded about my work and my concepts.
What are your favorite environments to shoot in?
Because I need a clean and quiet environment, I shoot mostly indoors with natural lighting. I would prefer to shoot my accessories and clothing outdoors with a model but models are so hard to come by and I need to shoot everyday.
What are the strengths of shooting primarily mobile? How does this affect your imagery?
No mobil shots here, I shoot with my Canon. I take my photography too seriously to shoot with a phone. I have a book coming out soon with all of my work so I needed high res images.
Who and what are the things that inspire you?
I’m inspired by many things. Mostly people who exceed greatness — Steve Jobs, Michael Jackson, Gordon Willis, Marlon Brando, Ingmar Bergman and George Lois to name a few.
Favorite instagrammers?
I ‘try’ not to spend too much time instagram because I love everyone I follow! The fact that I can connect with people from around the world at anytime still blows my mind!
Tell us a little about your everyday.
I’m very fortunate to be self-employed and I work hard all day and most nights. Three times a week I go for a morning jog in the park. Without fail, I always start my day with a cup of Cherry Marzipan Green Tea. I sit at my computer for about an hour answering emails and checking my RSS Feed. Sporadically, I’ll jump up and go thrift shopping but most of my day is spent creating, thinking and working on orders.
Around 7 O’Clock I stop everything and cook, because I don’t eat breakfast or lunch I always make time for a special dinner. The Mr. and I will sit and watch a movie and then resume working till I get tired.
I don’t own a television, I threw it away around 2008. I’m a big movie buff, when I knit/crochet I’m always watching something! I own hundreds of classics, and have a particular fondness for Westerns, Bergman and Hitchcock.
