La Voûte

Words

The guys of ‘matterdesign’ Brandon Clifford and Wes McGee address the realities of materials, loads and physicality in their piece ‘La Voûte de Le Fevre’. It was Clifford’s sorrow about the loss of our ‘ability to work with volume’ that led them to their research agenda surrounding volumetric architecture.

They created this permanent and vaulted wooden structure out of baltic birch plywood that seems like soaring regardless to it’s weight. As they state ‘It is intended to re-engage in a problem unfamiliar to our contemporary culture. This unfamiliar terrain produces a new monster. An architecture that is somehow ancient yet contemporary, heavy yet light, familiar yet alien’.
