Tutu Project

Words

This project by photographer Bob Carey is incredibly hilarious and inspiring. Mixing life with a little pink frill I couldn’t stop smiling, watching this grown man wearing nothing but a pink tutu in absurd situations like lying in the center of times square, standing in a field of astonished cows or dancing in the snow.

Carey always had a unique approach to self-portraits. In 2002, when Arizona Ballet asked him to interpret ballet, Carey donned a tutu and took a bow. He continued using this pink piece of tulle to express himself and in 2003 this quickly turned into a way to cope with his wife Linda’s breast cancer diagnosis. When he realized that these images helped her, and others dealing with this disease by bringing laughter into their lives, The Tutu Project was born. Their goal is to raise money through the sale of his prints and an upcoming book, Ballerina, to provide financial and therapeutic support to women diagnosed with breast cancer and their family members. Some say laughter is the best medicine and the artist says himself ‘Oddly enough, Linda’s cancer has taught us that life is good, dealing with it can be hard, and sometimes the very best thing – no, the only thing – we can do to face another day is to laugh at ourselves, and share a laugh with others.’
