A Voyage To Antarctica By René Koster

Scroll

For his series ‘Antarctica’, Dutch photographer René Koster traveled to the South Pole with a sailing ship built in 1911.

Inspired by the great expeditions in the early 1990’s, Koster set out to create a series of photographs in the ice-cold region without any elements of modern times. The images depict ice-covered landscapes featuring frozen ships and icebergs with a quiet atmosphere.

In a statement about the project, Koster says: “This series of photographs, taken with modern equipment, is a reference to the past. Personally, I feel no need for the photographs to look as if they have been created with techniques of the early 1900’s. This is why I have deliberately chosen to work in colour allowing the greyscales of the landscape to emphasize the blue captured in ice.”
