Minimal Building Block Furniture By Kengo Kuma And Associates

Words

In a collaboration with artisans from the East Japan Project, Japanese architecture studio Kengo Kuma and Associates designed a flexible wooden furniture concept, called ‘Chidori’, with the aim of helping consumers lead a more sustainable lifestyle after the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. The series is based on a single modular unit, made of 12 timber sticks with different connection points, that can be expanded into bigger pieces ranging from minimal furniture to buildings. Each building block can be interlocked without using adhesives or nails and is easy to take apart. Additionally, structure tests have confirmed that this system can be used for larger-scale architectural projects.
