Parque Biblioteca Espana

Words

‘Parque Biblioteca Espana’ by architect Giancarlo Mazzanti is rising high above the poor quarter of Barrio Santo Domingo. The construction was finished in 2007 as an initiative of the city of Medellín to provide residents equal opportunities in social and economic development.

The structure is a multi-building (library, training rooms, exhibition hall, auditorium and administration) in a single volume, allowing the architects greater flexibility and autonomy in their use, making the community more participative. The three building complex relates to the countryside. The dark black-brown structur seems to be folded within the surrounding mountains while the interior space invites people to read and study in a calm atmosphere. Daylighting is mainly provided through skylights, fom the terraces residents can enjoy a panoramic view.

This project is part of the exhibition Culture:City, that is asking questions about the impact of art and culture on cities and their architecture. Visit the exhibition from 15th of March – 26th of May 2013 at Hanseatenweg 10, 10557 Berlin.
